My Friday Five

This is not gonna be a fun weekend. These are 5 things I have to do this weekend:

  1. Write up my study guide for my exam. I have to take it sometime between today and Tuesday. Except I can’t take it on Sunday or Monday.
  2. Read a book for my other class. I don’t have to read the whole book, just a few chapters.
  3. Read a few chapters for my class that I have the exam in. Notice a pattern?
  4. Go food shopping for enough food to last 2 weeks. That way if I get bogged down, I don’t have to go out.
  5. Watch the big game. I know you didn’t think I was gonna miss it did you? Go Steelers!!!!!!!!!!!

Have a great weekend!

Joke of the week

Not really a joke but whatever!

Read the true story below about Kurtis and Brenda the Checkout Girl.

KURTIS THE STOCK BOY AND BRENDA THE CHECKOUT GIRL

In a supermarket, Kurtis the stock boy, was busily working when a new voice came over the loud speaker asking for a carry out at register 4.Kurtis was almost finished, and wanted to get some fresh air, and decided to answer the call. As he approached the check-out stand a distant smile caught his eye, the new check-out girl was beautiful. She was an older woman (maybe 26, and he was only 22) and he fell in love.

Later that day, after his shift was over, he waited by the punch clock to find out her name. She came into the break room, smiled softly at him, took her card and punched out, then left. He looked at her card, BRENDA.

He walked out only to see her start walking up the road. Next day, he waited outside as she left the supermarket, and offered her a ride home. He looked harmless enough, and she accepted. When he dropped her off, he asked if maybe he could see her again, outside of work. She simply said it wasn’t possible.

He pressed and she explained she had two children and she couldn’t afford a baby-sitter, so he offered to pay for the baby-sitter. Reluctantly she accepted his offer for a date for the following Saturday. That Saturday night he arrived at her door only to have her tell him that she was unable to go with him. The baby-sitter had called and canceled. To which Kurtis simply said,”Well, let’s take the kids with us.”

She tried to explain that taking the children was not an option, but again not taking no for an answer, he pressed. Finally Brenda, brought him inside to meet her children. She had an older daughter who was just as cute as a bug, Kurtis thought, then Brenda brought out her son, in a wheelchair. He was born a paraplegic with Down Syndrome.

Kurtis asked Brenda, “I still don’t understand why the kids can’t come with us?” Brenda was amazed. Most men would run away from a woman with two kids, especially if one had disabilities - just like her first husband and father of her children had done. Kurtis was not ordinary - - - he had a different mindset.

That evening Kurtis and Brenda loaded up the kids, went to dinner and the movies. When her son needed anything Kurtis would take care of him. When he needed to use the restroom, he picked him up out of his wheelchair, took him and brought him back. The kids loved Kurtis. At the end of the evening, Brenda knew this was the man she was going to marry and spend the rest of her life with. A year later, they were married and Kurtis adopted both of her children. Since then they have added two more kids.

So what happened to Kurtis the stock boy and Brenda the check-out girl?

Well, Mr. & Mrs. Kurt Warner now live in Arizona , where he is currently employed as the quarterback of the National Football League Arizona Cardinals and has his Cardinals in the hunt for a possible appearance in the Super Bowl. Is this a surprise ending or could you have guessed that he was not an ordinary person.

Kinda makes you feel bad that the Steelers are going to beat this poor boy in the Super Bowl in a 3 days, huh?

GO STEELERS!!!!!

Stores are closing early here on Sunday

It’s crazy here in Pittsburgh right now. The Steelers are dominating the news. They’re the lead story on every station. Never mind that we have a storm watch because of the ice and snow. They talk about the Steelers, then the weather, back to the Steelers and then the rest of the news until it’s time for the sports segment. Which they then talk about the Steelers.

Everybody is getting into the SuperBowl spirit. There are several pep rallies set for Thursday and Friday around town. Most businesses are relaxing the dress code for the entire week, letting employees can wear black and gold. Even some of the local retail franchises (Eat N Park and several others) are closing early on Sunday so that their employees can stay home and watch the game.

It’s gonna be crazy here on Sunday once the game is over.

The SuperBowl hype is unbelievable

For the past 2 weeks all we’ve heard about it the SuperBowl. Everything is a storyline. Hines Ward has a sprained knee, will he play (of course he will!). Big Ben had a concussion 3 weeks ago is he ok. How will he perform this year compared to the last big game? Now that’s a fair question considering Ben has said that he was nervous the whole game.

I’m almost glad the game is coming up soon. I don’t know how much more of this intense coverage I can take. I know when the Steelers get all of that hardware, they better consider a truck rental to haul it all back to Pittsburgh. I mean that Lombardi Trophy has to be pretty heavy right?

All I know is on Sunday, the Steelers franchise gets ring number 6. How sweet will that be?!

Tyler Perry in drag again?!?!?!

I had another post all written out but then I saw the ads for his new movie. Of course “Madea” is the title character. I don’t have anything against TP but I remember a few years ago where he said that he was retiring the Madea character. He still hasn’t retired her.

I guess I’m really tired of the whole phase. It’s not even the whole drag thing either. I know he wants to send a good message but his movies are super preachy. They start to get on your nerves. But his tv shows are the worse. Most of the actors can’t act and it seems like they’re just trying to upstage each other when they’re not trying to profile for the camera.

I know he wants to make the shows seem real but the characters are stilted and it’s really insulting. I hate to say it but both of his shows come across more as a shuck n’ jive routine than real acting. I guess he wanted to portray middle class blacks but in my opinion he really missed the mark. Not every middle class black family are like the Huxtables and perfect (they’re actually upper middle but whatever), but they certainly don’t act like the people on his shows either.

I guess Tyler is on a paper chase and he’s gonna dress in drag until people get tired of it. It’s a shame really because to me he seems like a person who doesn’t stand behind his word.

I haven’t gotten to the movies yet

I wanted to go today but I was so tired that I slept most of the day. When I did get up the last thing I wanted to do was go sit in a movie theater. I’ll go tomorrow and see one of the movies that I need to see. I’ll also buy the book for the other movie which I’ll read on Monday and Tuesday. On Tuesday I’ll go to the movies and see the other movie and write up the short papers that I need to have for school.

I wish I could buy the movies instead of going to the theater. Oh well, at least I have something to get me out of the house tomorrow.

My Friday Five

The top five things I plan on doing this weekend:

  1. I have 2 movies to watch. Both are in theatres so I have to go out and spend about 5 hours watching them back to back.
  2. I have to write 2 papers related to the movies.
  3. I have a chapter to read for another class. It’s a long dense chapter that will take some time to get through.
  4. Domestic stuff around the house - light cleaning and washing clothes.
  5. Hopefully sleep in for a few extra hours on both Saturday and Sunday.

Have a great weekend!

Joke of the week

New Perspective…

After being married 25 years, a man looked at his wife one day and said, “You know, 25 years ago we lived in a cheap apartment, drove a cheap car, had only a sofa bed and watched a 14″ black and white television.

But, every night I got to sleep with a hot 25-year-old blonde.”

“Now,” he continued, “We have a nice house, a new car, a big flat-screen TV, but I have to sleep with a 50-year-old woman. It doesn’t seem fair.”

His wife was a reasonable woman.

She replied, “Well, why don’t you go out and get yourself a hot 25-year-old blonde? Then I’ll make sure you will once again live in a cheap apartment, drive a cheap car, have only a sofa bed and watch a 14″ black and white television.”

The man rethought his priorities.

Shopping in the cold

I don’t like being outside in the cold. I especially hate shopping when it’s cold. Running from store to store or carrying bags is equally grueling. I went into one store yesterday to get a new pair of pants and the receipt printer wasn’t working properly. They had to void out my sale and have another person ring me up. After I left out of that store, I went to the shoe store but I didn’t see anything that I wanted to buy. That stinks because I need a new pair of shoes and a new pair of sneakers. Nothing in the store caught my eye though.

I blame it on the weather. I’m sure as soon as it gets warm you won’t be able to keep me out of the stores.

My classes are so hard

I know it’s only the 3rd week of school but I’m struggling already. My Lit class is ok so far. It will be a lot of work but nothing that I can’t handle. My Soc class on the other hand is a beast. I read that book for over 2 hours yesterday and I still don’t know what I read. The material is so dense and boring. It looks like I’m going to have to read the material at least twice every week just to make heads or tails of it.

I’m on a countdown to the end of the class already. Only 14 more weeks to go.
